I'm looking to buy a few wines from a few regions of the 2004 vintage for my son (born in 2004) to give to him on his 21st birthday. I'd like to know a few suggestions for regions around the world for this vintage.

The easiest one, for me anyway, are the 2004 Bordeaux only cause I've been able to find more info on them around the net. I've also heard that the 2004 Southern Aussie wines are supposed to be good; Penfold's is putting out some special bin releases, but does that mean that 2004 was good for the entire region? It's still too early for cali wines but how was the 2004 growing season in general? Also, although it might be too early, could you recommend specific wines that should hold up for 21 years? I'd love to grab some Bordeaux, barolo, cali cab/blend or anything else thath you think might be worth holding onto.

Thanks in advance.

Hi again RJ. Most long lasting '04s for example Brunellos, have not been released yet. Not a lot of Bordeaux or Reserve Cali Cab either. The best bet, also not around yet, is the Vintage Porto. For those it might be best until the year before and buy a 20 yr old one then.

The main reason for the 20 yr old Port recommendation is that is not only an easy way to go, but it will also give you a chance to see if he likes wine! This is not a given. I'm speaking from experience with four children ranging from 35 to 41, and that of many other consummate wine drinkers.
