I recently acquired an 83 Opus 3.0 liter and have two questions.
1. There was slight leakage from the cork. Maybe 3-4 drops. Is this typical of older wines as they age?
2. Have you tried this recently? I know 83 wasn’t the best year, but because of the bottle size, is it possible that the wine is still good/drinkable?

Don't know about Opus One, but I recall 1983 was about the worst vintage since 1971. I don't think it matters what size the bottle is, if the wine was not that great to begin with then all you have is a lot more mediocre wine.

I would question the storage...was it stored upright or on it's side? Proper humidity? and could the leakage be from excessive heat? If it's the latter you may have a cooked wine. Sorry it sounds like a lot of negative about your wine....have a few friends over for steak, pop it, and have back up ready.

Hi friendly and welcome to the board. Seems most retailers love to display big bottles upright which makes for an eyecatchjing display but plays havoc with the wine. I had a 750 of Hokus-Opus 83 2 months ago and didn't post because I disliked the sucker too much. Drew gave my answer....get some friends gathered round the table, pop the cork on that hummer and have a case of Amstel in reserve, Good Luck. WW
