I am new to your site and interested in learning more about wines. So much helpful information here to absorb. Will pick up the book "Wine Buying Guide for Everyone" recommended by Innkeeper. My question is can anyone recommend a nice Port?

Hi Queen, and welcome to the Wine Board. Don't know how deep your pockets are, and the the two she recommends in the book are a little pricy. An excellent value "port" (quotes are because it is not from Portugal) is Hardy's Whiskers Blake Tawny NV from Australia. It runs around $13.

Generally there are two different types of Port.

There is a Ruby Port that has a full fruity, dark berry flavor.

Then there is a Tawny Port that has a leaner, nuttier flavor.

It really depends on which is your preference.

Ports can be pricey, yet there are a few that are not that expensive.

Monsieur Innkeeper knows of that which he speaks. There are a number of luscious Aussie "ports" from Rosemount, Seppelt, Benjamin, Chateau Reynella and others.

Also try some of the Aussie muscats, such as the Yalumba Museum Reserve Muscat. They have the same intensity and depth (at the same reasonable price) with a somewhat different flavor -- and will also make your mouth very happy.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Wineguru, I prefer the Tawny Port. I'm willing to spend a little more if the flavor is right. I'll let you know what I pick up.

Seppelts and Hardy's Whiskers are two of my favorites.

Second the Hardy's Whiskers and Benjamins for outstanding Aussie Tawny ports at next to nothing prices.
