- jeepzeke - 01-12-2002 One year anniversy (dating not married)today and I'm making dinner for her. Problem is --I'm not a wine person but she is. So... Can somesone recommend some sweet white wines with low acidity for under $25? Thanks - Innkeeper - 01-12-2002 Hi Zeke, and welcome to the Wine Board. Try a Vouvray. This is the best chenin blanc in the world, from the Loire Valley in France. - Bucko - 01-12-2002 Any US late harvest Riesling -- you'll find no acid there! - jeepzeke - 01-14-2002 The Vouvray was perfect. I'm not even a wine person and I thought the stuff was great. However it seems that at an average of $17-$20 a bottle its not for everyday occasions. I noticed some else recommened a late harvest reisling. Is this a cheaper option for more regular drinking? Does it have to say 'late harvest' or are everyday reislings ok too. Thanks again Innkeeper-not only was the girlfriend impressed --I was to, and I never thought there would be a wine i would WANT to drink. - Thomas - 01-14-2002 Most late harvest Rieslings will cost a lot more than the Vouvray, and most late harvets I have had come with a fair level of concentrated sugar as well as acidity. I am surprised at the price of the Vouvray. Next time, look for Chenin Blanc from South Africa or California. I have to tell you, however, that sweet wine with low acidity is rather bland stuff--might as well drink juice. - Drew - 01-14-2002 Hogue Winery from Washington State makes a nice late harvest riesling for $10 or less. Drew - Duane Meissner - 01-14-2002 or if you want to try a GERMAN Riesling, look for a bottle with the word "Spatlese" (late pick) on it. DM - BuioAngel - 01-14-2002 I will have to disagree with the low acid comment made. I find I enjoy the rieslings with a higher acidity to it. Not so much like drinking sugar. I have found that the German rieslings have a fantastic blending of sugars and acid and make for a wonderful and delightful riesling. - wondersofwine - 01-15-2002 AND German rieslings are often ridiculously good values since they are "out of fashion" in the USA. The Lingenfelder Bird Label riesling that I reported on recently was not $13 or $15 a bottle as I thought but on sale at $9.99 for a bottle or $7.99 per bottle by the case! This particular brand may be hard to locate but you can usually find a Piesporter Spatlese or the like wherever wines are sold. |
