Hello, I've been drinking wines for many years but never really thought very deeply about the subject. I tend to favor white wines and have lately been sampling Pinot Grigio and Riesling wines. I am drinking a Riesling from Oliver Winery of Bloomington, IN. I checked out their website and found it very informative and I also checked out some websites about German Rieslings. I like this Oliver Riesling but I find it to be a little fruitier and sweeter than what I typically favor. My question is what other Rieslings should a novice sample and what is the general consensus about Oliver Wineries outside Indiana concerning thier Rieslings and other wines.

There are a few very knowledgeable Riesling fans on this site so you will most definitely hear from them. I would suggest that you move off the continent and move onto the "Continent". Try a few Rieslings from Germany, some from the Mosel region would be good and you can look for some with the level Kabinett or Spatlese for sweet or Trocken for dryer. German Rieslings are famous for their clarity of conveying the "terroir". Then try a few from France and Australia and you will notice significant differences.

Also you should read some of the posts on the riesling's page (go back 1 year) and see what sounds appealing! Have fun!

I have experience with German riesling but not with wines from Indiana. I second the suggestion of trying some Mosel wines. You might also want to take home a Rheingau wine or one from the Nahe to see the differences in style from region to region within Germany.

So I take it you are from Indiana? From Evansville personally. Oliver gives a decent tour but their wine isn't up to par as far as i am concerned. I think that Meridian makes a decent grigio for cheap.

Thank-you all for your suggestions. I think my next purchase shall be a Riesling from the Mosel region. I can't wait to try it. I look forward to learning more about wine and comparing them with you all.
