You forgot to preface with "I only drink champagne when I’m happy, and when I’m sad". So, you know that I know.

I bet it was some Lilly Livered character ...

She use to inspect her vineyards riding her bicycle due to a fuel shortage, but this became her trademark.
She only took over the champagne house after the death of her husband....not sure if her favourite sport was "bowling"....

She was a very beautiful woman...
And it was Winston Churchill's favorite Champagne...

- Thomas - 01-04-2005

And what happened to my post? I posted that the obfuscation on this matter was great, but CCK you took the bait in the meanwhile.

- wineguruchgo - 01-04-2005

Winston Churchills favorite Champagne was Pol Roger.

The quote: "I only drink champagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory.
I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." (Lily Bollinger)

You weren't supposed to give away the answer wineguruchgo.

- Thomas - 01-05-2005

It was homework?

- Kcwhippet - 01-05-2005

Could have fooled me. It sounded like the little riddles some folks occasionally put to us to test our wine knowledge. BTW, Mr. G, what we did with the language you gave us was to improve on it.

- wineguruchgo - 01-06-2005

Then don't pose it as a question:

"Who said this about Champagne" and give an incorrect hint as to the answer we can't reveal.

Bunk.

Iona and Jordan are wineries in South Africa. Iona is in Elgin and Jordan is in Stellenbosch, both in Cape Province. Stellenbosch is definitely NW of Elgin, but I don't know how far.

- winoweenie - 01-07-2005

Superior sluething KC. By the way AndyG did you know Tom Stevenson posts on this board when he has time? WW

Well, ww, just a little reasoned deduction. I figured that since this was for a MW test, why would they care about the distance between two towns. So, I went looking for two wineries named Iona and Jordan, and --- voila. I checked on Mapquest, and it's a bit uncertain what the actual distance is, though it appears less than 60 miles as the crow flies. Also, if you take the shortest route, it looks like a bit less than 60 miles. However, if you take the N2 from Elgin northwest, take a right on the R310, then a left in Stellenbosch onto Stellenbosch Kloof Road to the Jordan Winery, it may just be 60 miles. I have to do a lot of research on the internet for my "real" job, so I've learned how to use its power as a tool to help me find all kinds of data.

- Georgie - 01-07-2005

OOH..beware those MapQuest directions...the routes are correct, but not always the most savory. Once I went to a concert in Ridgewood, NJ, which is a lovely, affluent town. To get there, Mapquest took us via the heart of the worst section of Paterson, NJ. Scared the bejeebers out of us. It turned out there was a much safer, easier route that was a fraction of a mile longer.

- Thomas - 01-07-2005

WW,

I haven't seen a Stevenson post in years.

Actaully, a good questio for Andy G: who's Tom Stevenson?

Come to think of it, why does anyone need to know what Mrs. Bollinger said in order to receive an MW? I thought it was a serious diploma.
