Hello all, Im sure you get these posts all the time but I need some help. I am going over to my family's house for dinner during the holidays and was asked to bring some wine. The menu will be filet mignon(sp?) rare, salad, bread, etc. I obviously dont know anything about good wine but there are a few in my family that do. Do you have any good suggestions? I dont really have a price range but I dont want to get too extravagant. All help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin, and welcome to the Wine Board. If you go to www.wine.com they are featuring a wine for Christmas that is one of our current favorites. It is 1997 Easton, Shenandoah Valley California (versus VA) Barbera. It will go beforehand, with the steak, the salad, and the bread. It runs $18 per bottle. Bring two, and be a hero. They can get them to you quickly. P.S. You will receive many other suggestions we hope. Use your best judgment.

I would go with a 97'Swanson or 97' - 98' Blackstone Merlot for about $20. 1997 Guenoc "North Coast" Cabernet Sauvignon(pink label) for about $16. 1998 Greg Norman Cab-Merlot for $16. 1997 BV Rutherford Cab $20. Columbia Crest Estate Cabernet 96' $16. 1997 Raymond Reserve Merlot $22. Even the 97' Gallo Sonoma Cab. for about $10 is very good. These are just a few of my favs with Filet Mignon at $20 or under....there's plenty more.

WineNoob, welcome to the board. Lived in Tulser during all of my formative years, was kicked out of Holy Family, Central and managed to graduate with the first class at Will Rogers. You can pick from ANY of the wines given and you`ll probably get lots of hugs and kisses. All are super wines for the money and PURRFECT with Filets. Have a happy holiday. winoweenie

Tonight we had filet mignon with bacon rasher, rubbed with olive oil and Morton Rub. Had it with Maytag blue cheese dressing on our salad, and raspberries with whipped cream for dessert. The Easton Barbera went with everything wonderfully!
