Dear Marnie,
It is great to hear that there are bottles of my Barolo 82 sleeping in wine
lover's cellar waiting for special event to celebrate.
This is what it should happen to all the great bottles of wine.
I don't want to annoy you with my theory and my passion for wines and
especially for this particular one, but I cannot help it.
I was only twelve years old when in the fall of 1984 Mr. Artusio (owner and
oenologist of Cantina dell Porta Rossa) let me taste the Barolo 82 for the
first time. What an experience!!!! I said: "Good, very good" but I didn't
mean it! To me it was bitter, strong, thicker then a packet of chewing gum,
acid like a lemonade.....! We were definitely too young to understand each
other. Mr. Artusio smiled, didn't say anything, but he new it.
After four years I tasted again: a symphony !
Mr. Artusio said: "You see, Time changed you: he is able to speak and you
are now able to understand. Let him talk and take your time to listen."
What a great lesson that old man gave me that day.
In 1990 Mr. Artusio past away but his Barolo is still speaking about him.
Sorry, I am Italian and I talk too much. Back to your question.
Last time I had that Barolo 82 in the US was last year in Florida and the
wine was great. It was big, soft, intense and he could last other 10 years
or more. But as you know after 19 years every bottle has a different life
and everything depends on you, how you keep this wine and on the cork.
Be sure that the bottle is laid down, that the wine is not direct exposed to
sun light and that it doesn't get heated up.
If the cork is good you can wait as long as you want for your special moment
to celebrate.
Personally I have 10 bottles for me here in Italy and I will open one when
finally I'll be crazy enough to get marry, one when my first son will arrive
and one when he'll be twelve to give him the same lesson Mr. Artusio gave me
long time ago.

Thank you very much

Nicola Biscardo
