Hey, What gives? Does nobody know how to make fruit wine or is it a well guarded secret? level with me,should I even be trying to make this type of wine? Ben

Many people like to make fruit wines. Indy International is probably the largest wine competition that judges fruit wines. A nice web page to check out is http://www.virtualcommunity.com/fruitwine/ ran by Dan Archibald, a true gem of a fellow. Myself, I'll stick to the grape......

i'm sorry you've chosen to limit yourself to the grape,I've tasted some Blueberry and strawberry wines that would rival the best of the vine, Is'nt wine for the pleasing of the palate? I to love a good dry red (grape) wine, But I want to learn of all the good things that fruit wines can offer, P.S. Is'nt the grape a fruit?

Ben ole` bean, Don`t be huffy about MrD`s post. He`s Right as Rain. Until we see Lafitte, Mouton, Beaulieu Vineyard, Diamond Creek with plantings of vinifera "Strawberry" we`ll all stick to the grape. Yep, you`re rite aboput it being a fruit but it also has a history of making the worlds` greatest beverage when planted, cultivated, and vinified by estates with hundreds of tears of history. The fruit wines you`re trying to make are fun wines that are hit&miss in quality and have no way to improve into the nectar that great wines from grapes do. It`s like this is strawberry soda with a kick. Whatever you make remember, it `Aint gonna challenge Latour. winoweenie " I`ve tasted some Blueberry and strawberry wines that would rival the best of the vine"? You`re tasting of the best of the vine must be awfully limited.Maybe the best of the fruit juices tou`ve tasted?

I guess I shall be forced to do this once again.
What Dutton refers to is that the word "wine," when traced to its roots, technically refers to the result of fermented grape--it is a word that dates to the Phoenicians. It is the same with caviar, which is a word taken form the Turkish to mean, specifically, sturgeon roe, and no other fish egg.
Call it fermented raspberry, call it fermented strawberry, call it fermented blueberry (and I have tasted some fantastic ones) but do not call it fruit wine; aside from it being redundant, it has the distinction of also being wrong, technically.

Check with some of the Ontario wineries to see if their fruit wines are available in B.C. Stoney Ridge makes some. Southbrook has a few in the style of those richer Oregon dessert types. The most extensive selection is from Sunnybrook winery, that makes exclusively fruit wines. I know your question regarded making wine, but these wines give a lot of pleasure for the dollar.
Go to www.winelife.homestead.com and find the Ontario wine council (VQA) link to these wineries.
