Hello all

My regular wine shop has recently brought in alot of DOW's port. I have read alot about port and how it gets better with age ( meaning 20 yrs or more).

Just wanna ask a few questions:

(1) Vintages available are 1960, 1970, 1977, 1980, 1985. Which vintage is worth keeping for later consumption. They are all vintage bottle (not LBV).

(2) How long can port be kept before they go bad. And what is their peak age.

(3) Someone recommended buying the '94 and drink it 35 years later (well, I'm only 22) But I can't find any '94 here in Singapore. Anyone knows if any company does shipping? I am very keen.

Hope to hear from you all soon

Hi Yclim amd Happy Memorial day.The 60 and 70 are drinking now. The 77 is a classic port vintage. Have several in my cellar and they still have a way to go. This should start drinking well in another 3-5 years. The 85 also produced classic wines. These are for laying away for another 10-15. As far as the longevity, as with wine, provenance is key. Stored properly a classic vintage port will go 40-50 easily. As an example, I'm drinking the last of my 63s' and they are as good as it gets. WW

Gosh, Verne, the only things I have left from the 60's are my high school ring (with the chipped stone...don't ask) and a pair of bell bottoms that I wear on special occasions. Wish I had invested in port rather than other silly things.

Wasn't too much of a sacrifice Drew as I paid 17 for Fonseca, 15 for Taylor, 14 for Warre and, seeing as I knew nothing about port, refused a chance to buy 6 Quinta Do Noval Nationals' because the bandit was trying to get the astounding price of 40 per clatter. Last I saw it was selling in the 1400 range....ARRRRRRRRAAGGGGHHHHHHH!!!WW

Hello guys,

thanks for the speedy reply Happy memorial day to you too, Winoweenie (Even though I am not american). Infact, happy Vesak day to all Tongue

I am considering of getting Dow's 85 to keep. It costs about S$100 / bottle (apprx US$59). Would like to know if it is worth it.
Tried looking for Quinta do Noval , but it cant be fond in SIngapore *sigh*

- winoweenie - 05-27-2002

59 Is a good price. Don't waste your time. Every bottle of Noval National is sold before release. I was talking about in the early 70s'. WW

- yclim - 05-28-2002

erm....WW , when you ask me "Don't waste your time" , do you mean (a) don't hesitate, go get it! OR (b) don't bother getting it and keeping it.

Sorry yclim....Get the Dow... Forget looking for the Quinta. WW

Someone from Singapore must have read this post as well....

I just went back to the shop and was informed that the last 2 bottles of DOW's 85 was just sold a few hours ago. damn!

Anyway....they still have Warre's '85. Dow's '80 and '77 silver Jubilee...

Can Warre's be bought??

- yclim - 05-28-2002

I am interested to know.... What is a good port?? What are the qualities of good port?? I have done some research and '94 was acclaimed to be the port of the century! But what does this port have that other don't. And what makes it THE port of the century??

I know taste is subjective, but there must have been certain qualities to have it acclaimed and loved by many.

I hope you guys understand my question and don't find me too troublesome Tongue

- Bucko - 05-28-2002

Not at all. 94 the vintage of the century? Nah! 1927 is a killer right now. 1945, 1955, 1963 are beautifu. 1970 is stunning, as it 1977. All of these vintage of the century hypes are just that, hype. No one, and I mean no one, can predict what a wine will do in 20-30 years (or more), they can only make guesses. Don't buy in to the hype, trust your own palate.

- yclim - 05-29-2002

Well, guys. I think I'm gonna get 2 bottle of Warre's '80 to keep.

And I also intend to lay my hands on a dozen of Dow's 2000 (Are they released yet??) How to I order en primeur?? (Through my local supplier or directly to the vineyard??). They are for my nieces and nephews

For other newbie's like me, there is a reference site http://www.thevintageportsite.com/
I wouldn't recommend that you follow their rating religiously (after all they are rating on their own wines. Why would they give bad ratings to their own wines!) But it is definately a good reference.

Cheerio!
