Hi.... just wondering what kind of wine(s) would be appropriate/good for a "fine arts gallery opening"? It's a smaller gallery, so looking for something pleasant and reasoneably priced. Would like red and white, but which ones? what types? Can you help? Thanks

Hi Inwarsaw, and welcome to the Wine Board. For occassions like that I like bubbly. You should be able to find a selection of Spanish Cavas in white and rose' that would fill your bill. Both need to be well chilled.

If you wish to present the option of still wines as well, a Leitz Dragon Stone Riesling is a pleasant inexpensive German wine. St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc (California) would be a crisp, refreshing drink. If food is being offered, the wines should complement the appetizers. If no food, avoid tannic wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and go for fruitier wines like Beaujolais Villages (perhaps from Joseph Drouhin) or a Pinot Noir such as Villa Mt. Eden.

My all time favorite red that drinks well by itself is the Talus Pinot Noir found just about everywhere where I live for approx. $8 a bottle. In fact, it's about the only table red I enjoy without food.
I like WOW's riesling suggestion too.

At my wife's art gallery, I've served Deerfield Ranch Sauvignon Blanc, Becker Cabernet Sauvignon (the "Texas Iconoclast"),
Falling Star Malbec, Kendall-Jackson Sauvignon Blanc and Tommasi Pinot Grigio. The Sauvignon Blancs have been the favorites. Finger foods have included assorted cheeses and crackers and (when in season) fresh Gulf shrimp, along with tangy-cheesey roll-ups (have no idea what's in those puppies), ham rolls, and assorted fresh fruits.
