Ok, now that we know everybody's favorite way to make iced tea, let's talk about something more fun. Can anybody tell me how to make a good pitcher of sangria? Do I just put fruit in some red wine or is there more to it than that? Yes, it's finally summer in NJ!

This recipe come from a thirty one year old source called: Foods of the World from Time Life Books; Wines & Spirits.

For 1 quart:

1/2 C Superfine Sugar
1 C Cold Water
1 Lime, thinly sliced
1 Orange, thinly sliced
12-16 ice cubes
1 bottle Red Wine (preferably Rioja)

Mix all together in a 1 1/2 - 2 quart pitcher.

Thanks, IK. You, too, are awesome. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I think you forgot one instruction, Innkeeper...

After "Mix all together in a pitcher", you should have added "Insert straw. Make second pitcher for friend. Driving not recommended after consumption, although you may wish to push friend home in a shopping cart"

Got the same set, IK. I still use them frequently.

Hey KC, did you see the recipe for Blueberry Beer Batter Waffles down at the bottom of the Board?

- Kcwhippet - 06-25-2003

I did, indeed. I've already put blueberries on the shopping list.

Georgie, some recipes add soda water or Brandy but I stick with fresh fruits and red wine (you can also make a white wine Sangria.) I like to add chunks of peach or nectarine along with the citrus fruits and squeeze a bit of orange juice into the mix. I eat the wine-soaked peach chunks, etc. after drinking the wine.

We are having a 4th of July cookout, and my wife was asking about Sangria.

Georgie beat me to the question.

Thanks IK & WoW, we'll definatly be trying these next week.

I think I might make a jug of it for the tailgate party on Monday.

- lizardbrains - 06-26-2003

And funny enough, I came here to ask the same thing!!! I knew I had seen some sangria recipes on here before, and before I even had to search the website I found it right here at the top of the page - perfect! Thanks, guys.

This Sangria recipe is a keeper! Delicious and no work!

- Innkeeper - 06-30-2003

It's a shame you wasted $11 Rioja on it. Never use anything costing more than $6 myself.

Where are you when I go shopping!? I declare, I'm tempted to hop on the train to the city and do all my shopping at Is-Wine so foodie or one of his knowledgeable people can take me by the hand down the aisles! Seems like either I can't find it, spend too much for it or don't like it! But making mistakes is part of learning...that's what I always tell my kids.

You said you also bought a $7 one, which would have been fine. But you drank that one and made Sangria from the $11 one. If I'm wrong about that, correct me.

- Georgie - 06-30-2003

Not exactly right, IK. I tasted both, used all of the $7. one and only part of the more expensive one. So I guess I didn't do too badly. Truth is I liked the cheap one better. I found out that the wine expert at one shop nearby works in the evenings. You pay top dollar at his place, but he would be a good person to get to know. The prices plus the fact that there's always a lot of smoke in that place keeps me out of there. But I think he's serious about wine and would be a great help.

- Innkeeper - 06-30-2003

Sounds fine.

Off to the tailgate and Wynton we go!

- otisfxu - 07-15-2003

This may not be anywhere near being sangria, but we ended up mixing 1/3 cup red wine, 1/3 cup fruit juice (red frutopia) and 1/3 cup of sprite with plenty of ice. Best summer drink we have tasted. Simple, but it works.

Hi Otis, and welcome to the Wine Board. What you fixed is called a Wine Cooler. They don't just come in pop bottles, but can be mixed at home. There is a way to combine them. We liked to take bottled premixed Sangria, and combine with ice and ginger ale to make a nice Wine Cooler.
