Need to buy some nice wine to drink at a dinner I'm giving for my staff. I'd like it to be of high quality (within price reason)and able to drink now. Prefer Cab or Zin, need to buy between 4-6 bottles and would like to keep it under $40/bottle.

With that criteria in mind, what would you guys pick up if you planned on drinking it within a few days?

A couple of favorites come to mind without much thought ('tis late in the day).

Peter Lehmann Barossa Shiraz or Cab - any vintage.

1997 Edmeades Zin

Absolutely anything from Elyse

Greenwood Ridge Zinfandel (old vines) if you can locate it.

You may find this hard to believe, but I have the found the '00 Bleasdale, 'Mulberry Tree' (WS 89), to be both complex and ready to pop as many Cabs from Oz are wont to be. Runs $15. If you have enough equipment, you might decant them an hour or so ahead of time. Not essential.

The 99 Sterling Napa, 99 Pine Ridge Rutherford, and the 00 Viader are all drinking superb and more than likely would pass muster with the wine drinkers in your group. Have a party!. WW

Rick, you are in the best area for some of the most wonderful red wine in the world! I am so jealous! May I suggest you visit David Bruce Winery in the Santa Cruz mountains. I discovered a Cab there that has absolutely no bite, it is so smoothe and the best I have ever had!!! When I visit Monterey I always set aside a day to go to David Bruce and take a case home with me! It is the best!! I also like their other reds, but the Cab is just fantastic, and it is reasonably priced.
