What is a good overall popular wine that I could get my mom for xmas? Any suggestions?

That's not much to go on, bear! Suggest you visit a retail wine shop and tell a salesperson that you want to put together a wine basket for your mom. Then specify a budget: "I don't want to spend more than $X." Say you want both reds and whites. And see what turns up.

Try CHAMPAGNE!!
A top of the line suggestion: Krug 1989 - runs around $170.00 a bottle plus or minus depending on the market area.
Others to look for: Go to your wine merchant and tell him you want to look at his selection of Recoltant-Manipulant Champagnes......... (Thats the code on the label for the Champagnes that are produced by the growers - they tend to be the best of the best at reasonable prices.)
