I'm new to wine but I would like to try a good red wine that taste smooth, sweet and that is not that expensive what would you recommend

Hi Spvasquez and welcome to the Wine Board. Try a Beaujolais. Not a Nouveau or even a Villages; just a plain ole Beaujolais from the year 2000 and not one year older.

Beaujolais are widely available in liquor and wine shops. Look for one from Duboeuf and serve it slightly chilled. Price should be in the range of $8 - $12.

Hotwine thanks for the info. I'm new at this I have a quick question is duboeuf the brand name and beaujolais the kind of wine would you mind explaining the difference to me I would really appreciate it. thanks

Beaujolais is both a region of France and a type of fruity red wine made from the Gamay grape that is produced in that region. Georges Duboeuf is a French winemaker and negociant (wine broker) who has built a very successful business in the marketing of Beaujolais wines.

You might buy a Beaujolais and also an Italian lambrusco and compare them. The lambrusco wines (available often in grocery stores) have some sweetness. I started out preferring the lambruscos and now prefer the Beaujolais wines as my wine tasting progressed and got a bit more sophisticated.

I prefer dry reds myself, but my husband loves Lambrusco. It is semi-sweet and slightly effervescent. It can be bought in a half bottle for around $5 in my area, so if you don't like it, you don't feel you've spent too much for a "life lesson". [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]
