Well. Interesting dilemma goin on here..
I started drinking wine a few months ago, I could smell and taste all the "fruits" and other flavors of several/most wines I tried. Now, for some reason, with most red wines (beaujolais, merlot, pino noir, etc.) all I smell and taste is WOOD. Tastes and smells like a wood crate or the like. What happened? Can anyone give some advice? I'd like to be able to smell and taste the wine again..... HELP!!

That depends on the wines you are drinking, if you are drinking them alone or with food, on your mental and physical well-being, and a host of other factors.

When I eat beef or cheese with an oakey red I can barely taste the wood (unless it is really over-oaked, like Kendell-Jackson), when I am tired, either mentally or physically, wine tastes different. When I am sick, I lose my taste for wine, and drink very little if any. It just doesn't taste right.

Hello jareese,

Your tastebuds actually have memories which allows you to taste and remember what things taste like...or should taste like. You are obviously very conscious of wood and if a wine (red or white) is over-oaked it's apparent to you.

My advice to you is to jump out of your box for a few bottles. Maybe buy a nice Alsacian White, Un-oaked Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc.

This will confuse your palate and might give you a fresh start. What I'm trying to accomplish here is to get the wood out of your mouth for a little while.

Hope that helps
