Hi everyone
I'm looking to buy my husband a Bottle of Red wine for his birthday. Not such a hard task you all say. Well here's the hard part I would like to purchase a bottle of Merlot from his birth year of 1970.
Please if anyone can help me I'm from England and know absolutly nothing about wine. The price I am willing to pay is around £50 - £80 which will be around $90 - $150

Hi Yorkie Lass, and welcome to the Wine Board. It would be very difficult to find a thirty four year old Merlot that was drinkable or affordable. Only the top Pomerol's and their immediate neighbors fall into the latter category.
It would be much easier and afforable to pick up a 1970 Porto. It was a very good vintage, and, for example, you could get a 1970 Graham's Vintage Porto at La Reserve in London for 54.32 pounds sterling.

Hi Yorkielass and wewlcome to the board. The advice given by IK is rite on, however there are some lovely Pomerols from that vintage that are stunning wines aand in your parameters for price. Look for a La Conseillante, L'Evangileor at the high end of the scale a Troranoy. If you can live with a regular Bordeaux some great ones I've enjoyed in the l;ast 2 years are the Palmer,Lynch Bages,Montrose, and La Mission Haut Brion. Hope this is helpful If, for some reason, you can't find any in the UK repost and I'll give you the names of some of the suspects that mite have the juice over here. Good Luck. WW

A top classification of Bordeaux wine (1970 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux.) Should be a winner if cellared correctly for all these years (in approx. 55 degree Fahrenheit, somewhat humid conditions, not much light or vibration). The problem on E-Bay is ascertaining if the wine has been properly stored. You might ask the seller if he/she can provide reassurance on this point (usually refered to as provenance).

On the other hand a Port is much more forgiving because it is sweet. The Grahams would make for a very romantic dessert with something very chocolate.
P.S. The Mouton, though a blend including Merlot, is primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon. Have to admit though, if it was stored properly and the bid doesn't go to high, it would be a sentational buy and very enjoyable.

WW, Yorkielass had already found an e-bay seller for the Mouton at 69 pounds I believe. So she knew the price when she asked about buying it.

I dint see anything about the Mouton. Over in my neck of the woods it sell for between 200 and 250. WW
