Several years ago in the UK, our local supermarket used to have a German white wine called (as far as I can remember) Meinzer Dohmer. Without warning it suddenly disappeared and I have been hunting it down ever since.

Yes I realise there are countless whites, but it was consistently good and we miss it. Of course, being a bought-in wine there's every chance it still exists - but with a different name - hence why I am hoping that the knowledgable among you might be able to help.

Welcome to the board. I'm trying variations on that name using Google, but getting the same result - nothing. There are so many possible explanations for a label's sudden disappearance, we'll simply have to wait for someone to pop up with a clue.

Here we are! "Mainzer Domherr". Do a search on Mainzer Domherr and you'll see UK sources come up.

I was going to suggest that it is probably from the city of Mainz, hence Mainzer, before I got to Hotwine's post.

A million thank-you's! Both for the welcome and the information. I was convinced I had recalled the spelling correctly (though my one brain-cell does tend to work overtime these days ), but there's no denying that I get a completely different set of search results now!! And what's more, I've got less far to go, too!

Thanks again for solving this!

You're very welcome, Seeking. Come back often.

Wonders, that was the logic I used.... after ruling out Meinzer, looked for Mainz wines, and that pulled it up. Had tried to recall my experience with Mainz wines 30 years ago .. in Rhein-Hessen ... some were good, some weren't. This one must fit the former category, for Seeking to be looking for it. We got lucky.

At the hotel this weekend a lovely, but almost non-English-speaking German couple checked in. They were from Mainz. I said, "Oh, I know they make wine in Mainz." That they understood and they perked right up. What an educational place this wine board is!
