I'm helping to organize a wine auction for charity, and a few people have approached me asking "How can I find out how much this wine is worth?" They're trying to find out fair market value for the wine they're donating. Is there a definitive web site(s) people use to find out this information?

Welcome to the board. If the wines are still available at retail, they can usually be found at wine-searcher.com. For very old cellar relics, the donors might need to consult a professional appraiser or auction house.

wine searcher is definitely the best place for selections available for retail. For actual auction prices, Chicago Wine Company is one of the biggest auction houses, and on their site, there is a free download of all of their previous hammer prices for tha last several years. they even have a free program to go with it making it searchable. their website is www.tcwc.com

Another site to check for past auction prices is www. winebid.com. Be aware, though, that fair market value, retail price and auction price can mean very different things to different people.

not a problem. they're a great auction house to buy from. they don't have a buyers premium. Some of these places steal from you by charging as much as 17% for a buyers premium.
