Hello,

I'm looking for a good sweet and fruity wine. I have some trouble sleeping through the night most times. My dad recommended maybe a glass of wine before bedtime. I don't drink. I asked a clerk at a liquior store for a sweet fruity wine and he recommended Arbor Mist. I really didn't care for the taste. Not really sure what "sweet" wine tastes like, I didn't think it was sweet at all. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Hi MQ,

Welcome to the wineboard! Arbor Mist should be pretty sweet because, if I'm correct, they add fruit juice to it. I have never had it but it might finish dry.

In the German section of a good wine shop you will see the word Auslese on the bottles. They are very sweet - like a dessert wine. The bad news is that they aren't cheap. You might find a 1/2 bottle of Sauternnes that will be less, not sure.

Outside of the German wines or Sauternnes you might try making yourself a cocktail. Something like Midori and Orange Juice, Amaretto and OJ will probably serve the same purpose. Relaxing you.

Others might have ideas as well.

MQ,

IMHO, I'm not sure that drinking alcohol is going to be the answer in the long run. It could help you to sleep through the night but it may well disturb one or more of the stages in your sleep cycle. As a result, you may sleep throughout the night but wake up feeling "less" rested!

I'm thinking a nice warm bath a few hours before bedtime and a glass of milk would be more beneficial. The milk contains tryptophan which helps you to sleep more naturally.. Turkey meat also contains this chemical.

Perhaps, Bucko will have better insight on this issue since he's a practicing physician.

That said... I agree with what Winegroucho has suggested in his posting. A small glass of Auslese would be easy to get use to...

Or, try a glass of sparkling wine such as the Marchesi de Gresey La Serra. It has a "relatively" low alcohol content but is quite easy to drink. (I just served this to a group of non-wine drinkers at a 50th birthday party and it was received quite well by the guests.)

The essence here is that it's suppose to help you relax before bedtime...

[Bear in mind that, for some folks, a glass of wine can give them a headache and trying to sleep with a headache is not much fun. So, you might have to experiment a bit to find a wine that "agrees" with you.

Good luck

So many wines... so little time!

Cheers

Looked on the BC Liquor board web site but was unable to find the Marchesi de Gresey La Serra. Are you able to help me out as I would like to try this one Capo..... Might you have an SKU# ?

Hi KNJ,

433615 Moscato d'Asti La Serra
Marchesi deGresy

This came out of an old BCLB catalog (November 2001) so the number may have changed. If you can't find it at the BCLB store... try a store called, Kitsalano Wines on West 4th Avenue. They carry it but it'll cost you a few dollars more. The specialty store on Alberni may have some left as well. Cost is about $27.50 a bottle I believe.

If you like this style of wine... you may also want to give the Michelle Chiarlo Moscato Di Asti a try. This one runs about CDN$23.00...

If you can't locate the Marchesi DeGresy at either store... let me know and I'll locate the distributor's name and number for you. I believe they're located in Vancouver.

Make sure you chill them before drinking...

Thanks Capo. The SKU# is currently listed. I'll see if any Island liquor stores carry the wine.

Hi KNJ,

Great! I hope you enjoy it... post a note to let folks know what you think of it, ok?

The Michelle Chiarlo is quite tasty too.

If you like those two, you really need to try the Moscato D'asti from La Spinetta IMHO...

Thanks E...

I'll have to that one a try!
