Late Saturday I was on my second favorite wine store (Total Wine & More) and bought (on impulse) a 375ML bottle of Chateau La Jorine 2002 ($5.99). This is a Bordeaux 85%Merlot and some Cab Franc. The nose was typical Bordeaux Minerals (pencil shavings), black fruit, and oak. Not bad. But the big shock was when I taste the wine. It was so tannic that it did not have any flavor at all! My first thought was that this is what a person new to wine will feel when drinking a red wine for the first time... Now I understand why they use the word "bitter" to describe the tannin shock.

I'm thinking that this wine is one of those that need 10 or 20 years on a cellar. The last few drop of the wine was little mellower but still going strong.

Either it needs to age or it has no fruit to begin with and won't improve. Probably the former (needs to age) but I'm not sure.

Since this was a. mostly Merlot, and b. a 375 ml bottle; it sounds like bad news. Could you not detect any fruit (other than the black fruit on the nose) or acid on the palate? If, not it was badly out of balance and probably not going anywhere.

I would say on the nose was normal to me, compared to other Bordeaux that I have tried before. Berries mostly, oak, and minerals. "Nose wise" I found it OK, no problem. I did not detect any fruit on the palate, but there was some acidity and alcohol, but the tannins were to strong.

I was reading some notes on the producer last night and looks like that year was not particularly good for this producer and apparently a good year for this producer may be the exception...
