I would like to know some of the various types of sweeter tasting wines. I'd like to have a nice wine just for the pure enjoyment of it, not to accompany any specific type of food. Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Hi Tedd, and welcome to the Wine Board. Try a 2001 Nouveau Beaujolais, but not after January. It has a short lifespan.

"sweeter tasting wine." Do you mean you want dessert wine? If so, you won't like IK's suggestion.

Guys,

With all respect due, Beaujolais Nouveau is really more about the name than anything else.
My belief is that it should be sold in plastic bottles to make Gluckwine-or used in the kitchen. To start with as its name says, its a new wine. There is no oak aging process. Secondly the Gamay grape is really not a great cepage (grape).- And third, it is a disappointing wine for its price / quality

I recommend you try a good California wine. A cabernet or merlot. Five to ten years old and enjoy it!

JES.

Jes, I agree with you about Nouveau Beaujolais (not my cup a wine either), but I completely disagree with you about your assessment of the Gamay grape. You obviously have no experience with real Beaujolais. And it is a fact that wine doesn't need to be aged or fermented in oak in order to be good.

Incidentally, California Merlot or Cabernet doesn't seem to fit the newbie's taste preference for sweet wine, unless you are talking about the great mass of junk Merlot that comes out of California.

If you want some serious Beaujolais...try some Domaine Diochon Moulin a Vent or Thevenet Morgon. They will beat anything coming out of california at the same price or more.

You may wish to experiment with dessert wines or ports for sipping. Try some of the "icewines, Portugese oporto, french sauterns and Tokaji Aszu."

Thats a bit of a spendy list for "experimenting."
