It's not really in my budget to buy something for wine storage, and I really won't have all that much wine to store. I do have access to a underground basement that tends to be dark and cool.

Would this be a good place to store my wines? What should I store them in that would be best to keep them out of the elements?

Thanks!

If the temperature in the basement doesn't go above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, that would probably be the best storage site for now. Ideal conditions include temperature around 55 degrees and some humidity, but wines can tolerate slightly higher temperatures for a period of time. I'm contemplating buying a wine storage unit to hold 50-100 bottles. Will look at Lowe's in the next week or two. But I have a lot of wine on hand already (probably enough to carry me for a year or 18 months without buying any additional).

I should go check the temperature down there now. It's about 100 degrees out there today, so the basement should never get any hotter than this! :-)

Here in Texas we call that a cold front!
