I received a bottle of Yellow Tail Shiraz as a birthday gift from a friend (along with other wines - all of which I was familiar with, except this one).
I had the Shiraz at dinner tonight, with some jumbalaya (call me crazy!).
I was clueless as to what Shiraz was, and since it was called "yellow", I mistakingly assumed it was white! But upon reading the bottle, I realized it's red - so I figured since it's my only bottle of wine left in the house (gasp!), I might as well have it with my jumbalaya tonight! I'm so glad I did!
The spiceyness (ugh, I'm sure I spelled that wrong) of the jumbalaya was just barely complemented by the wine. I wouldn't have wanted to go any spicier - or it would've been too much. My first drink I said "That's a strong wine!" I think that it was so full of flavor, that my immature tongue was overloaded. I enjoyed it though. The bottle talks of "vanilla oak" - though I could taste some wood (not too much at all!), I didn't taste vanilla. But like I said, my wine-tasting is quite immature as of yet.
I'd be interested in hearing what you guys think of it... I saw probably 3 posts regarding different people buying this wine!

Lb, I haven't tried the Yellow Tail, but there has not been an Ausie Shiraz I've not liked yet.
I will be tempting that this weekend. The wife baught an Ausie Shiraz that cost $3.50, maby it will be a nice suprize. [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/rolleyes.gif[/img]

Yellow Tail is a fast rising star at the entry price point. My experiance is that the wines compete well at that price level.

Liz, the shiraz was probably not a good choice for the jambulaya with too many strong flavors battling each other. Beer would have been my first choice with spicy, cajun fare. Save the shiraz for steaks, roasted meats and stews.

Yellow Tail is sort of the Two Buck Chuck of Australia. Some folks got ahold of a lot of excess bulk wine, blended it, bottled it, designed a spiffy label and shipped it off to the U.S. It's not as insipid as 2BC, and is actually pretty good for what it is. We sell it for about $6 in all flavors.

Yellow Tail also contains about 1% residual sugar.

Thanks, all. If that's the Aussi 2BC, then I'll have to try more Aussi wines!!!! I have yet to try it with anything else (besides the jumbalaya), since I don't cook many meals with my DH gone! I liked it, though, so I'll be sure to buy it again and pair it with something more appropriate (now that I know what to expect).
