I recently receive a gift: a bottle of 1997 Pinot Noir Red Icewine made by Summerhill Estate Winery of B.C. Canada.

I previously thought that there is only white icewines. Would somebody tell me what red icewine is?

Should I keep it for a few more years or consume it right away?

Thanks for your help.

The word "gimmick" comes to mind. In other words, capitalize any way you can from a known identity.

Knowing how both ice and red wine are produced, it seems to me the idea of red ice wine is contrarian at best; anyone disagree? I am sure someone does.

Hey, it's what happens when you try to grow Pinot Noir in Canada, 'eh! We know, we live further north than half the population of that tropical paradise. The red Ice Wine is actually a fairly decent dessert wine. It is havested and made much the same way as white Ice Wine. You can drink it with just about anything you would have with Port. Chocolate fudge cake comes to mind. It will improve some, but not much with age.

Live and loin (that goes with Riesling)

I still think it can't be an actual "red" wine.

Foodie, there was an article in the Spectator about this very subject less than a year ago.Why would it be any different making a red ice-wine than the more common white ice-wine. You let the grapes hang on the vine till the first freeze, harvest them as soon as they`re frozen, squash them lil` buggers, the red juice that comes out is minus the water(frozen,ie Ice) ,is concentrated and Voila! Red Ice-Wine. Is it good? Like a great 83 Ice-Wine from the moselle? In your dreams. Have fun and drink as reccomenmded. Pinot in Canada!!!!!!!!! Horrors. Winoweenie
