My wife and I are having a few friends over for a dessert party. I've read a little about dessert wines but have never tried any. I'd like to serve one at the party, but don't know where to start. Can anyone recommend a dessert wine that would be fairly accessible to folks who are wine drinkers but not connoisseurs, and moderately priced?

Thanks!

Hi JohnG. A couple of approaches:

1) type "dessert" in the search function on this site & you'll find some excellent ideas.

2) check out the following site for other suggestions matched to numerous specific desserts:

3) For an argument in favor of dessert wines AS dessert see the "desserts" link on the following page:

They also note a fave' of ours: Pedro Ximenez sherry..we prefer the Lustau brand..great over fine vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy! cp

Red is easiest. Get a Ruby Port imported from Portugal. It will run around $13-$15 for a full size (750 ml) bottle. White dessert wines generally will run you that and more for a half size (375 ml) bottle. There are some wonderful ones from France, Germany, Italy, and the U.S. available. We like those from Bonny Doon. Their Muscat Vin de Glaciere is to die for and runs around $17 for 357 ml. They also have some very nice seasonal ones for around $10. Did find one recently at a local wine tasting that was priced like the Port. It is from Martin Brothers Winery, Paso Robles and called Moscato Allegro. Think they have something to do with Eberle. At any rate it is nice and was $13 for 750 ml. Be sure to serve the white dessert wines ice cold; around 35 degrees F. The Port can be serve at room temp or slightly chilled.

Hello to you JohnG!

I am new to "this" myself...but I have a couple of faves that I thought I would share with you!

My very favorite dessert wine would be most any "Vin Santo". The Italians REALLY know how to do these!

Also, very recently I tried:
Da Vinci
late harvest
Sauvignon Blanc
1987
(375 ml)

AWESOME! I went out and bought a few bottles to have on hand! I think they were about $14 or so.

Good luck to you, I hope the party was great!
