I know everybody has a Merlot ,even the Italians , but what true italian wine taste like a Merlot but isn't named that?

Hi Buddy, and welcome to the Wine Board. First of all, don't just dismiss Italian Merlot. They make some of the best varietal merlot you can find. Look for those from the Collio region. As for others that "taste like merlot", don't know what your reference point is. If you mean most American Merlot, don't know of any Italian Wine that tastes like plums and oak.

The occasional Valpolicella Classico can carry a few of the trademark flavors of Merlot, as can the Gaglioppo (spelling) grape that's the workhorse grape of the south, mainly around Calabria. Down there, they use the Gaglio the same way our WA wineries use Merlot, as a softener and flavor support for Cabernet. For a truly wonderful Italian Merlot, try the Zenato at about $11 or the Bolla Colforte at around $10..OR, if you can spring for it, try an amazing one: either the Falesco Montiano at about $40, the La Carraia Fobbiano at $38, or the awesome Avignonesi Desiderio at about $50. In the Calabrians, try the Librandi Gravello, at about $25, a Cab-Gaglioppo that will light you up.
