I have recently become interested in learning about wines and have been trying various kinds (what is available at the local grocery store, that is). I have discovered that I am partial to Cabernet Sauvignon...I don't care for sweet or fruity tasting wines...I have yet to find a white wine that I like as well. Can anyone recommend a white wine that is dry and not too sweet?

Hi Catwina, and welcome to the Wine Board. There are many white wines out there that meet your criteria. One of the easiest to run across is Sauvignon Blanc, which interestingly enough is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The ones from New Zealand are very popular right now, and almost all are at the $10 or $20 price point. Look for one called Nebiolo.

Some other whites are Chardonnay (usually presented with a heavy dose of oak, and therefore not to my liking), Pinot Grigio, and a host of other Italian whites which are almost always dry and oak free.

I think the NZ Sauvignon Blanc is Nobilo.

Another type you might try is a Pinot Gris from Oregon. It's like Pinot Grigio, but made more in the Alsace style - more fruitiness.

Thank you for the information...I will try your suggestions.

I particularly enjoy a nice glass of Chardonay whenever I am looking for a glass of white wine. I also enjoy white zinfandel. You may want to add that to the list of wines that you'd like to try.

Hi Jason, and welcome to the Wine Board. Drink what you want to drink, that's what we all do. Don't worry about giving out advice either. I find most Chardonnay tastes like wood, and that most White Zin is too sweet.

I have tried several Chardonnays and I didn't care for them. I did find a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and it was a little more to my taste...not too sweet or fruity. I was considering a wine club and would appreciate your opinions as to which ones are best.

Is anyone familiar with the 4 Seasons wine club?

- Innkeeper - 09-25-2006

Not familar with it.

I would highly recommend zinfandel and chardonay. These are 2 of the best white wines that I have ever tasted. Anything else pales in comparison as far as I'm concerned.

Jason I deleted your advertising as I warned you I would.

Furthermore Zinfandel is a red wine, and most Chardonnay tastes like trees not grapes.

- Catwina - 09-25-2006

Jason, I have tried several Chardonnays and I have to agree with Innkeeper. I did not care for any that I tried...that goes for Zinfandel as well. Also, thanks to everyone for your replies...I am only considering a wine club because I have limited resources in the area in which I live and I would like to try a little better of a selection than what is available here. I have read posts in some other areas and "James Gang" club seems to be very popular.

We would highly recommend the James Club, except they do not have very many white wines, and those that do send are mostly Chardonnay. Typically they send six reds, a Chardonnay, and a dessert wine.

Catwina,
Since you live in North Carolina, you might considering ordering through e-mails or web accounts to Carolina Wine Company in Raleigh. In most instances you would have to pay shipping charges. They do carry some nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc such as Bedford Road and also some German and Austrian white wines. Their website is
http://www.carolinawine.com and you can subscribe to their e-mails for the types of wine that interest you. They also carry some nice California and Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. You might also like to try Spanish Rioja wines from the Tempranillo grape.
