I have a dinner date tomorrow and she will be serving Fettuccini Alfredo (sp?). I'm guessing I should bring a white wine. Can someone suggest something good under $30.00.

Hi Greenhorn, and welcome to the Wine Board. For a white, would go with a 2000, repeat 2000 Pinot Grigio. Albola, Pinot Grigio, Friuli (DOC), Aquileia is a good one. For a red, which I would prefer by a mile with this rich dish, go with a Barbera d'Asti. Stay well below $20 per bottle, as the bigger, more expensive ones would be too much for the dish. Or, you could be a sport and bring one of each!

Thanks for the suggestions Innkeeper!! I will probably go with the red you preferred. Bringing one of each sounds like a great idea too, but it is the fist date & I might give her the wrong idea. Hmm..maybe on the second date....j/k....Thanks again!

Greener, she's preparing dinner for you? On the first date? I'd add at least a half bottle (375 ml) of Champagne, and make sure I arrived with it fully chilled and ready to drink. This is no ordinary first date, friend. It's showtime, the big leagues. Take along something for her house/apartment, a little flower arrangement or flowering potted plant. Ask her if you can bring something like a dessert - a pie or ice cream - pick 'em up at the supermarket. And be sure to help set the table and do the dishes!

I would go with a nice Chardonay. Preferably a cheap white burgundy. Had one with fet. alf. the other night and it was quite good.

The second is not a chard, but a readily available italian wine that should also fit the bill. Both are friendly, fruity, have some acid and just a touch of creaminess on the finish which should match with your fet. alf. And the best part is, both are under 10 bucks! As far as the bubbly, if you can find a half bottle of Pol Roger NV, it should be around 20 and is dang good stuff. My wife's fav.
