i'm 26 years old and i've been drinking wine for awhile now, but i don't know what's good exactly. It's going to be my anniversary with my girlfriend and I want to get a really good wine. What's a good wine that's around $200?

Hi Chinoboy and welcome to the board. With the parameters you've set there are lots of choices. Where do you live? Someone on the board can probably give you an excellent store for your exciting purchase. WW

Also what are your girlfriend's preferences?
A wine may be generally regarded as outstanding but may not be the type your girlfriend would enjoy. You might buy a famous Chateauneuf-de-Pape for example and she might prefer a German Riesling with some residual sugar.

Maybe a safe option (not knowing your GF's taste in wine) is a really nice bottle of champagne. For example, a bottle of vintage Krug will probably set you back around $200. Another advantage with champagne is that ou can find a good, expensive bottle that is ready to drink. With wine it could be a bit trickier, a lot of the time really expensive wine can use some additional aging in the purchaser's cellar.

Heck..speaking as the frugal woman I am, I say put that money toward a piece of jewelry that she'll have forever, and spend a bit less on that which is consumable. I know I'll be labeled a heretic for that suggestion!

Anniversary screams Champagne. If I had $200 for an anniversary, it would go for a bottle of Jacquessin (sic?) RD, whatever the available vintage. You might find it on the web in a specialty shop. If I couldn't find Jacquessin, it'd have to be Bollinger RD, whatever's available. Unlike Dom (and others) these two only bottle a RD wine if the year is right. The Jac is more chick-magnetic as it has the most beautiful label with angels and some blurb about Napolean. It is also a better Champagne.

What a wonderful man you are! Yet, I have to ask if your honey will understand and appreciate a $200.00 bottle of wine. Truthfully, will she?

If not, why not go out for a wonderful dinner, which would include a nice bottle of wine. The dinner you both will remember. Do you have any restaurants that allow you to bring in your own bottles? Many today do allow you to do it and you can get a killer bottle of wine for around $50 and spend the rest on dinner.

Just my $.02

I would say do what wineguru or georgie are saying. You will get a much better outcome i would guess.
