Why do people collect wine?

I'm a college student and I'm doing my senior thesis on the function of wine in society. My third section is on why people collect wine. I am looking for anyone to help me answer my question and lead me to some books or reference to help me even further. Thank You.

Will try to boil down hundreds if not thousands of reasons to three. First, the same reason why people collect anything. It is their interest, so they collect it. Same as collectors of art, antiques, or any kind of bric-a-brac. Secondly, they collect wine as a investment. Despite what the stock market is doing lately, investing in wine is much more riskier, but many people do it. The third category is what we might simply call wine drinkers. These folks know that some wines need to age for some period of time prior to consumption, so they "collect" some of their wine purchases for their future enjoyment.

Good answer, Innkeeper. Neat and concise. Can't really add any more to that.
