As a follow up to my earlier question, what is the best way to store an open bottle of wine after only a glass or two is taken out? I have seen some put it back in the wine rack and some just stand it up.

Also, what is the purpose of storing wine in a rack that tilts it down toward the cork? There has to be a reason. I am just curious.

You got some very good answers from Bucko and IK on storing open wine in your last post. Personally, for a day or so, I generally put the cork back in and stick the bottle in the refrigerator - red or white. If I don't think I'll get back to the bottle for two or more days, I use Private Preserve, which is an aerosol can with argon, nitrogen and CO2. When you squirt the gases into the bottle, they displace the oxygen which is what makes the wine go bad faster than anything.

As for storing bottles with the neck tilted down, the corks are porous. When you store a bottle upright for an extended period, the wine can evaporate through the shrinking cork and is replaced with air (oxygen) which will make the wine go bad faster. Of course, that happens over a fairly long period of time and it's exacerbated by higher temperature and lower humidity.
