My boyfriend and I just started to explore the world of wine recently and I am so glad that I found this site.
We recently recieved several bottle of wine from his Dad who also doesn't know much about wine. We don't know what to do with them. Are they still good to drink? Should we drink it ourselves or maybe they'll be a great Christmas present for people who will really appriciate them.

1997 Pinot Noir from California
1995 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile

And the French ones' lable read like this:
(What kind of wine are these?)

Chateau-Margaux, Grand Vin, 1982, Premier Grand Cru Classe 1855, Appellation Margaux Controlee.....

1990 Chateau Cap De Mourlin, Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru...

Hope I didn't ask too many questions at once.

Thanks!!

That one that says 'Margaux' isn't anything significant, so if you're looking for someone to give it to as a Christmas gift, then I could take it off your hands.

No, I am definitely KIDDING! That is a phenomenal bottle of wine. One of the great producers of the world and a great vintage. I am going to let the other members give your more info, as they may have actually tasted this (or been more than two years old when it was produced).

As for the first two, could you give the producers' names please? That way we can give you more info.

Your boyfriend sure does have a nice dad ...

Thanks Joey for your quick reply,

Wow~~ really? The Margaux one is that good? cuz you used the word, phenomenal, does it mean it's really expensive and we should keep it for ourselves?
I am thinking giving one of the wines to my boss for Christmas which one should I pick?

Here's more info on the first two:
Castle Vineyards, Los Carneros 1997 Pinot Noir
Echeverria, Reserva 1995, Cabernet Sauvignon,

Thanks!!

Hi Meow meow and welcome to the board. For someone that you say doesn't know zilch about wines ole' Pop certainly got his hands onto some great Juice. The 82 Margaux is a wine you should handle like a new baby.... pamper, powder, then POUR into a glass for you and hubby. What a way to start the new year! This wine rates in the top 10 best in my drinking experience. Give the Pinot or the Chilean wine to your boss. They are both nice wines that will make excellent gifts. I gor so excited over the Margaux I forgot the other wine but it was from the outstanding 90 vintage, so it too should be coveted and kept. Suggest you give Dear-ole'-Dad a bigger hug than usual next times he's near. Joyous Noel. WW

Don't give that Margaux away, that's for sure! Drink it for a special occasion and savor every sip ... don't forget to decant. You are a very lucky girl.
By the way, to answer another of your questions, the Margaux is a Bordeaux, meaning it is composed of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. The Cap de Mourlin is also a Bordeaux but comes from a different area, called St. Emilion, where the same grapes are used but (if I remember correctly) merlot is the more dominant varietal. And again, you have an excellent vintage on your hands and an excellent producer as well. Not the same level as the Margaux but I still wouldn't give it away.
