I've been searching around the board a bit and reading about storing wine. Now, I thought I was pretty cool to have 2 wine racks (small), but now it seems that having them displayed in my great room (temp around 70 degrees) is not such a good idea. Up till now, I've been drinking it faster than worrying about storing it, but with all the great recommendations on this board for various varieties, I'm actually accumulating several bottles.

So...what's a good starting point for a novice like me, in regard to purchasing a modest storage unit that will keep the wine at a lower temperature? And where do you keep these storage units? Are they attractive enough to display?

Thank you...

If you are fortunate enough to have a cellar or basement, in Up State NY, all you have to do is move your racks downstairs. This is know as passive storage. If you are in an apartment or a house on a slab, you need an active unit. As you say there is a lot of information on this board and others. You can usually get a good deal on a starter unit, which you can always use, even if you move up, at any of the large discounters such as Sam's, Costco, etc. One of former active participants moved his starter unit into his office!

Thank you, Innkeeper. What should I expect to pay for a starter unit?

I do have a full basement, but it's a new home and well insulated, plus the heat runs down there, so it's about 68. The ideal temperature for storing wine is....? (50-60 degrees???)

Hi WWL. If you only have 30-50 bottles that will be consumed over the next year or 3, 68* is very adequate storage, if the temp is constant within bounds. When cellaring
wines for over 4-15 years the ideal temp is 55-57*. Good to see another satisfied wino coming along. WW

Agree with WW. I don't have any experiance with active units. Go to the storage/cellars/ranking thread a go back a year to find many good suggestions.

Costco has a 60 btl unit available locally in stainless steel with glass front for $300. That's what I paid .... 3 yrs ago?... for a 34 btl unit from Sam's, black with glass front. Still using it in the laundry room, even after adding a larger EuroCave (in the garage) and converting the old storm cellar to wine storage. For a small unit, $300 is the most you should have to pay, and all of them are attractive enough to be used in a great room or whereever. Just keep in mind that, whatever you buy, you'll think it's too small within six months.
