Hi,
I was wondering what is a cabernet? How is it different from any other type, say, a chardonnay..? Excuse me if this is a dumb question.

Hi New and welcome to the Wine Board. Cabernet is the first name of at least two varieties of red grapes and the wines made out of them. The most popular is cabernet sauvignon. It is grown and makes great wine all over the world. It is also the primary ingredient in Red Bordeaux wines. Cabernet franc is also made into wine with the same name as well as French regional wines including as a subordinate ingredient in Bordeaux, and as primary grape in many wines from the Loire Valley such as Chinon.

Chardonnay is a white wine grape that is grown almost as widely as cabernet sauvignon. It originally came from Burgundy in France where it is the primary grape in White Burgundies with many regional names such as Chablis, Rully, and Macon Villages.

bay, that would be the simple way, but it is also not the truth. There are a host of wines equal to or more full-bodied than Cabernet or Chardonnay.

IK's explanation is the one to follow.

Hello Bay.
You are so wrong to generalise. Misleading to say the least.

A more succint answer is that Cab Sauv is the King of the Red Grapes and Chardonnay is the Queen of the SWs'.WW

What may be even more amazing is that one of my real good friends knows as much, if not more, than I do. He's from Mumbaii.
