I see that my first Tobin James club order has posted to my credit card. I guess the waiting is nearly over. Patience is not my strongest asset. Hopefully someone can help guide me as to which to age and which to consume when it arrives. Does anyone know, do all James Gang members get the same shipment or might they vary a bit?

Having belonged for ten years or so at this point, I can only remember one time when one of the bottles varied. They took three wonderful wines from their library, and divied them up three ways. So, chances are, all of the shipment will be the same for all.

After arrival, I usually post which ones I put in rotation, and which I plan to lay down and for how long.

I'm looking forward to trying these new (to me) wines. Thanks for your input. You mentioned library wines...Around the holiday season, between t-day and c-day, our nearby Oliver also releases library wines. Last year they had a 1999 merlot, (not estate grown), I thought was great. I don't know how or why they hold these but I'm glad they did, and waiting to see what's up for this year.
Is there a good book, or where can a novice find info about how to recognize a young wine that has holding potential? Is it in the taste of the tannins, or in the texture, or just wise ole experience? Thanks, and a great day to all. WP

Learning about aging is an aging process. There are really no shortcuts. Some wines you know by where they are from and who made them, tho even these can vary by vintage. The second method is personal experience. The third method is learning from others. In regard to the latter, you will notice that even seasoned geeks, will ask about a specific wine on this and other forums.

It's been a busy few days for the shippers around here, too. Got the James Gang the other day. David Coffaro, Lewelling, Loring and Audellsa came in yesterday. Got an email that Siduri will be in today. The cellar's filling in nicely.

So, about the Loring, (gary's and rosella's for me), Probably plan for what, 2010 at the soonest, along with the Tobin's?

Since I'm still sort of new to wine...I'm hoping in 09, to pop an 05 as well as a fresh 08 (I guess that's what will be new) to see what the diff the aging makes. does this seem reasonable?

Also hoping Oliver releases an aged out merlot library stash soon to contrast with an 05 I have on hand. Best way to get experience? WP

With good storage, you can probably push both the Garys' and the Rosella's out to about 7 - 8 years. However, they would both be delicious right no - with some splash decanting.
