Am a seasoned professional from the internet software business looking to make a total career change into the wine industry. Currently in the NYC area and trying to figure out where to start. Have spent considerable time tasting wine and visiting vineyards as a hobby.

What is the best place to start to get into the industry? If it is retail, which are the best stores to target. Or is it better to focus on the distrubutor or importers and again which ones should I look at.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Jewels, and welcome to the Wine Board. Retail is the best and easist place to start. Would not quit my day job, until nailing down a good position. Many retailer is New York are open in the evening, giving you an opportunity for a little moon lighting.

If after time, you can make contact with distributors, and perhaps move up the wine chain with them. Distributor have contact with wineries, wineries have contact with grape growers, etc. Somewhere along the line, wine writers fit in; I'm not sure where.

Hi Jewels and welcome to the board. Living in NYC you are located in the same town as our resident wine Maven Foodie, who owns a store known as Is-Wine. If ennybodies in the whole-ever-lovin'-universe can give you some serious guidance, HE BE IT!. Good Luck. WW

Thanks for your help and suggestions. As I am planning a full career shift I would look to go into retail full time at least for a short while. Did manage to check out some of the big shops in NY to see what they are like.

Thanks for the name of someone to contact in the business. Will try to get in touch with them soon.

If you have any other tips, suggestions, or contacts please email me at juliebonne@hotmail.com

Appreciate all your help.
