I would like to buy a very good friend of mine a nice Chardonnay as a Christmas gift. I went to the local liquor store and saw some expensive ones... but I know that doesn't mean they are good. Could someone recommend a nice Chardonnay that my friend will enjoy? I am willing to spend up to $30. When he brings a bottle to my house it is usually Gallo... I want to give him something extra special. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bonmoo, and welcome to the Wine Board. Go to one of your large, fine wine stores in MA, and ask for an "Unwooded" or "Unoaked" Chardonnay from Australia or New Zealand. Some brands to look for include: Plantogenet Omrah, St Andrews, Alpha Domus, and Kim Crawford. However, I have never found one from either country that wasn't first class. Plan on spending between $8 and $15.

Bonmoo,

Where do you live in MA? I work at a wine shop in MA. If you tell me where you are, I'll tell you who to see to get a good bottle of Chard.

I am in Methuen. I would appreciate any help you could send my way!

I sampled the 2001 Madfish Chardonnay from Australia the other day, $15, delicious.
