we had to pick a region and was given south africa...came up with Amani sauvigon blanc 2000....what can you tell me about this wine

If that's the Stellenbosch, Wine Spectator gives it an 87. Have not personally tried it.

Have not tasted your wine, but am familiar with the quality of SA SBs. If WS gave it 87 out of 100, you can be assured that if it cost twice as much, the rating would be in the 90s.

Philly, Wine Spectator is a widely-read wine monthly magazine that features wine reviews and articles. They use a rating system in their reviews that is scaled 0-100, with 100 points being the best. You can see them online at winespectator.com.
