- fetu1990 - 10-04-2003 Have just joined the hospitality industry and would like to ask if someone would be kind enough to give me a basic rundown of the differences between wines, chardonney, sav blanc, merlot etc.... Would be greatly appreciated as I'm a bit embarassed to ask my work colleagues, who seem to know it all. THankyou - sgutte - 10-05-2003 fetu1990, most of the experts on this board will recommend a book called "Wine For Dummies". Though I have not read this book, I know this series on many other subjects and is always a good introduction book. You mentioned Chardonnay, Melot, etc.)which are grape varieties and many wines are made from a single variety, but not all. There are other things about wine "culture" you'll want to learn about if you are going to be in the industry. Below are a few sites I found useful when learning myself: http://www.decanter.com/learningroute/default.asp http://thehomewinecourse.com/ http://members.aol.com/bellavue/grapes_bot.html http://eat.epicurious.com/drink/ewg/index.ssf?/drink/wine/ewg/ewg.html http://www.wineeducation.org/home.html - Georgie - 10-05-2003 Another book, "Great Wine Made Simple" by Andrea Immer is a great resource. - Thomas - 10-05-2003 You might also want to ask your boss in the hospitality industry, who really should provide training, if not help pay for it. |
