I need to locate a red wine from the Rhine River Region. A friend spent time in Geneva in 1986 and has great memories of what he says is a great French (?) red wine! Can any one direct me on how to obtain any red wine from the Rhine River region in 1986?

Hi Christy, and welcome to the Wine Board. The only French wine district in the Rhine River Valley is the Alsace. The only red wine from there is made in very small quantities. It is made from pinot noir, and is called Pinot d'Alsace. This is not to be confused with white wines called Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris from Alsace in much greater quntity. No red pinot from Alsace made in 1986 would be much to drink today, so you might look for a more recent vintage.

It would be much easier to get, again in a recent vintage, a wine from Burgundy (not American burgundy). Most red wine from Burgundy is also made from pinot noir, and usually made much better than in Alsace. Prices range from a low of around $10.00 to a high you don't even want to talk about. A fairly decent red Burgundy can be had in the mid $20s.

IK, maybe she meant Rhone???

Roberto, that would narrow the choice down; wouldn't it?

Perhaps, Christy, you can come with the name of the wine. That would go quite far in determining what it is you seek.
