Hello everybody i am new in here and i am in desperate need of help. i come from greece where i study and i work. i am a waitress and i study hotel management.recently i have been hired as a waitress in one of the most famous restaurants in greece and i think its a great oppurtunity.the problem started when my captain asked me if i knew anything about wines and i replied that i knew a few things. greeek wines mostly . since i was working i always tasted wines. he decided to make me somekind of a little wine seller.
i may know about greek wines but i DONT know anything(almost) about foreign wines and some wine families.
could anyone help me by sending him our wine list and giving me some informations about it and about wine generally? or just tell me a good book to buy!

Hi Piazolla and welcome to the board. The reason I didn't answer your post yesterday is I haven't the foggiest about Greek or Italian wines which I imagine make up a lot of your list. My suggestion is to post the wines on your list by numbers and with the combined knowledge of the preverts who inhabit this site you will probably get a fairly comprehensive answer. I can help with the Calif and Bordeaux, IK, Foodie, Roberto, Bucko, et al can fill out the rest of the world. Good luck. WW

Book recommendations: Andrea Immer's "Great Wines Made Simple" (she has another book on pairing wines with food) and "Wine for Dummies." Both have basic information on grape varietals, characteristics of the wines, storing and serving wine, etc. Later on you may want to look at books that specialize in a region such as Burgundy or Germany or a large encyclopedia of wine such as Hugh Johnson's, but the Immer and "Wine for Dummies" will get you started.
