Hi,
I've been collecting old wines for about a year now and now I'm able to buy a bottle of old Champagne. On the label I can read : Blason de France, Perrier-Jouet à Epernay. It dates from 1966.
The gentleman has 9 bottles of them.They are packed three in an original box and they are in very good, some in mint condition(they have been wrapped all the time!).
I'm considering to buy one of them.The asking price is € 515.00.
Is that a good price or is that too much?
Can anyone help me?

Welcome to the board, Tinny. A quick search on wine-searcher.com turned up some 1959, 1971, 1975, etc. but no 1966. The 1959 was priced at $372.91 in San Fancisco and London for a magnum.
To pay that kind of price (if I was so inclined, which I'm not), I'd want guaranteed provenance. It would be very difficult to determine with any certainty that the wine has received impecable storage since release. I wouldn't take that kind of gamble, but perhaps others here might.

Thanks for your answer, but I don't have the intention to drink the bottle.
I only want to add it to my collection.

Not being denigrating to you, but that statement makes me crazy. Wine is made for drinking, not collecting like a butterfly collection. Yes, we all age wine in the cellar, but we have the ultimate goal of drinking them.

Hi Tinney and as much as I hate to say it(blush) I agree completely with Bucko. And the advice on provenence should be taken seriously. Is the price you quote 515 euros? Is the bottle size a regular 750ml? If so, the price is WAY out of line for the bottling.WW

I did a google search and found that at auction the 1966 Dom Perignon Champagne went for $269.00 Dollars which converts to $225.00 Euros.
That's all I can offer you.

Sorry, for the misunderstanding. I did find a quote on the net, saying that some bottles of that year are still good to drink and some others don't. Since I started my wine collection, I've been looking for rare bottles. I do not have the intention of drinking it just like that, but open it on a special occasion.
It's just the price I was worried about.
I thank you all for your remarks, but since I couldn't find any bottle sold on the net (and I did find Dom Perignons and others) I thought, that perhaps these bottles were so rare, the price could be correct.

Tinny never apologise for asking questions on this board. MOST of the fellers and gals aboard have hides thicker than Rhinos' and skulls to match. Probably a fine bottle of Champagne but as stated earlier too much money. Happy holidays! WW
