This may be the most novice question you've received in some time. But here it is: Our local paper had and article on wine storage which said "It doesn't have to be nestled in fancy racks, but it should not be stored on its side or upside down because the cork could dry out." Is this a print error? How would a cork dry out if the wine bottle is on its side and the wine in contact with the cork? Did I miss something?

Obvious print error -- you still have your sanity.
