I am enjoying wine more and more these days but my beginner choices of sweet and light (GALLO Café zinfandel, Lambrusco Riunite) are now a bit sweet for my tastes.

Any recommendation as to a few I should experiment with next. As a next step so to speak.

I would try Sauvignon Blanc for white and Pinot Noir for red.

I would, however, stay away from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (not really representative of the grape).

The SB should have nice grapefruit flavors and the Pinot should taste like fresh cherries.

You can get a bottle of each for less than $15.00.

Also consider a Beaujolais-Villages or Beaujolais Cru (such as Fleurie or Moulin a Vent). (The Beaujolais Nouveau comes out this month and is drinkable for only about two or three months--the other Beaujolais wines have a drinking window of one or more years, especially the Beaujolais Cru).
Beaujolais is generally fruity enough to resemble a sweet wine but does not have noticeable residual sugar. (Some vintages are more tart than others. 2003 was probably an atypical vintage because of the hot summer in Europe and may be sweeter in taste than other vintages).
