1-looking for something to impress the guests with for the upcoming holidays. they are not wine drinkers and i would like to introduce them to something more sophisticated than kedem. are there any good sweet or semi-sweet wines in the $10-15 range?

2-also, what good kosher merlots are out there in the $15-20 range?

3-what do you think of the langer reserve series (thummerer winery, hungary)?

I have liked many of the Baron Herzog wines. He also imports some such as the Herzog Selection wines. Their Merlot Bordeaux sells for around $10. Not familiar with the Langer Wines.

Here is a link to a list "The Best Kosher Wines In The World" compiled by Daniel Rogov, a very well respected wine critic in Israel.

and here is another link, also compiled by Mr. Rogov "Not The Best, But the Best of the Rest 150 More Kosher Wines"

Mr. Rogov's lists are 2 years old. Since then several new wineries have sprouted in Israel, but not all of them are kosher. Two of these that have a Merlot that I am quite found of and are in the $10-15 range in Israel (so I would expect no more than $15-20 in US)are Recanati and Galil Mountains.
