I've been getting wine delivered from "a taste of calif." club every month, and while I have started stocking a small stash, I haven't been impressed with any of them. One of my local retailers has suggested some tasty selections but I kind of like the sport of getting "surprise" bottles delivered, (if they were good!). Do you know of any reliable clubs a novice could join?

Your retailer is likely to be more reliable than a wine club. I don't understand why you'd rather be surprised instead of tasting first and deciding for yourself what it is that you like.

As you've already discovered, unless they are associated with wineries, the majority of wine clubs mainly dump underachieving wines on the public, and not at underachiever prices either. You are being less surprised and more taken for a ride.

Foodie, my goodness! We have a wine club here at WINES.COM. The feedback has been very positive, contrary to whatever clubs you are thinking of. Check it out. In more than 3 years, I've only ever gotten positive comments.

See the links at left? Click on "Gift Ideas for Wine Lovers". In our store, you will see a link in the top row for the Global Wine Club.

You'll receive two bottles a month from a very good winery somewhere in the world. That's the fun of it. The wines comes from everywhere -- Australia, Europe, US, So Africa, So America. It's always changing. You can choose either two whites, two reds or one of each.

Cost is also quite reasonable at less than $40/month, including shipping.

Check it out. You can get there directly by copying this URL: http://wines.com/store/wineclub.html

Cheers!
Jackie

Jackie,

I said "the majority of wine clubs" not all.

Thanks for your input. I don't really know avery much about wine and different types, so that's a big part of why I'm interested in a club. I have looked at the global club on this site but I am a little learey after my first club experience at the other place. I think I'll give this one a try. Thanks. Bythe way, this forum is really interesting for us beginners, thanks for all the posts to everyones queries.

I am in a few different wine clubs, testing out to see which I like the best. I would stay clear of wine.com, their prices are higher than any other online wine retailer. I am currently a member of:

Gold Medal wine Club:
goldmedalwineclub.com
They offer a few different levels of membership. I am a Platinum member and an International member. VERY satisfied so far, and have reorderd wines. Their international club is interesting, they ship (with the wine selections) different "things" from the country being shipped, i.e. a book on pasta, Italian music CD, etc. from Italy... and so on.

Oriel Wine:
orielwines.net
Great wines and great concept, check them out.

Let me know if you've found anything to share...
