Hello, I am very new to wine and am looking for suggestions on reds to try. I do not like that super dry felling in my mouth. I was recently directed to try Pelee Island semi-sweet merlot. I like this one alot, and then was pointed towards "The Black Dog" from Chateau Morrisette in Virginia a blend I believe (I live in virginia). This one did not bother me as far as dryness goes, but the after taste was a little weird. Finally I tried another blend a Menage A Trois Red Table Wine which is ok flavor wise, a little dry but not enough to turn me off to it if the flavor was superior. So far I still like the Pelee Island merlot the best. Can anyone offer me some suggestions on what to look for or on any specific wines (or varieties) that might be good based on my limited tastings?

Hi Cfairchi and welcome to the Wine Board. So far you are on the right track for what you are looking for. There are really only two choices for sweet red wines, the Italian Lambrusco, and local wineries east of the Rockies. Sound like you have found a couple. Recommend you look up yours and nearby state wine associations to determine where they are and which are closest. Go to google and look up (state name)Wine Association.

For a sparkling red (with bubbles like Champagne)you might like a Brachetto d'Acqui from Italy. Banfi produces a popular one called Rosa Regale that might be found in a grocery store or wine shop. It tastes a little like strawberries or raspberries and is a nice match with dark chocolate.

Oh yeah, WOW, you mention both dark chocolate and strawberries on this particular day. We're having family resteraunt carry out (Apple ee's), but with an Oliver strawberry wine and a double choc cake for desert this Valentines eve! (it's not always about the wine) Happy day to all. WP
