I was under the impression that shiraz was a grape, but when served one at a host's home on our road trip last week, he said "This is an Australian shiraz, a blend of merlot and cabernet."
I assume he's right, but I just wanted to make sure.

You friend is either dead wrong or you misunderstood him. Shiraz is the way Ozpeople spell and say syrah. Some in California are catching this disease now too. The wine could have been a blend of shiraz (syrah), merlot, and cabernet. Ozpeople do alot of blending, usually quite well.

He was wrong. Shiraz is a grape, as are the two other grapes mentioned. Although the Cabernet he referred to is likely short for Cabernet Sauvignon, there is another Cabernet (Franc). So he could have been doubly wrong if he thought the wine is a blend of Merlot and one of the Cabernets but not the correct one.
