I'm also going to be in Virginia for a couple of days in October. I already have plans to go to the Williamsburg Winery. I'd like to hit some other ones there but to be honest I really have no idea of the location of the viticultural areas of the state, nor any big winery names. I'll be staying in the Hampton Roads area and would prefer not to have to drive more than a couple of hours.

We went to the Williamsburg Winery a little over a year ago. It was interesting. If you plan on tasting, be aware the regular no charge tasting is something to avoid. The run of the mill wines they pour weren't terribly exciting. Sign up (through their web site) for their reserve (or some such name) tasting. You have to pay for this, but they take you down into the cellar and pour some better than average wines, including some older vintages.
As for elsewhere in Virginia, the best wine are found around the Charlottesville area. There are some very good wineries there like Horton and Barboursville. It's about 150 miles from the Newport News/Roanoke area and will take about 2 1/2 hours, but that's where the best wines are. I sure hopw you're not staying in Hampton Roads, unless you're on a boat. That's the waterway separating Newport News/Hampton and Roanoke.

KC, the Williamsburg Winery now charges $7 for their regular tasting and $25 for the reserve tasting. Do you think the latter is worth the cost?

All I can say is that it was for us. The quality of wines tasted was far superior to the general tasting, particularly since they opened about 4 or 5 of their older vintages of reserve wines.

As a resident of Va.I have tried nearly all wines produced in the state. The King Family Vineyards in Crozet just outside Charlottesville is highly recommended. Their whites will compete in quality with any producer in the States. No retail as is produced in very small lots. Purchase through their website.
